Scope

Revista de Investigación e Innovación en Ciencias de la Salud (RIICS in its Spanish acronym) is a peer-reviewed Latin American scientific journal of the health professions, whose purpose is to be a channel of disciplinary communication of original articles, review and reflection derived from research processes that provide evidence to respond to current needs and problems.

Thematic area

RIICS focuses on speech, voice, hearing and language; speech therapy; sports science; sports therapy, rehabilitation; and related areas to Health Professions.

Intended Audience

Primary readership and scientific community focused and covered by RIICS include professionals, teachers, researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, and public interested in new achievements in the health professions.

About the authors

The scientific community of authors covered by RIICS for the publication of articles include professionals, teachers, researchers and graduate students of the health professions who have publication proposals derived from research processes.

Type of articles

The types of articles published by RIICS include researches, reviews, reflections, editorials and letters to the editor. This type of production must be original, making an important contribution to the understanding and solution of social problems in health issues, as well as to the development, discussion and advancement of the discipline. The sources cited should be primary and from recognized Editorials that use peer review.

Research Article

For RIICS, a research article is an original and unpublished production that presents in a detailed and organized manner the results derived from a completed research project. This type of article follows the RIMRDyC structure (resume, introduction, methodology, results, discussion and conclusions). It should have a maximum length of 5000 words and at least 25 bibliographical references. 

Review Article

Document derived from research that systematically compiles, organizes and analyzes the most recent and important researches in the area; it presents the evolution of a topic providing a general and current overview of its trends, controversies and debates; its authors should be researchers with expertise in the field of research. For this typology, RIICS includes systematic reviews and meta-analyses that follow the guidelines of the PRISMA statement. Similar to the research article, it should follow the RIMRD&C structure. The maximum length should be 6000 words and use at least 50 bibliographic sources for its analysis. 

Reflection article

Original document that presents research results from an analytical, interpretative and critical perspective; the reflection should be focused on a specific, controversial, emerging or current topic in the area. Although it is a particular position adopted by a person or group of people based on evidence, it must be expressed in a clear, coherent, organized and argued manner to demonstrate a deep and broad understanding of the topic, leading to new ideas and perspectives. The author must have experience and expertise in the field of research to justify his or her position well, and be clear about the implications or consequences of the opinions expressed. The structure of the article should contain the following parts: summary, introduction, reflection or point of view, conclusions and references. The maximum length of the article should be 4500 words and at least 25 bibliographic sources should be used.   

Editorial

Document written by the editor, a member of the editorial board or an invited researcher in which orientations are provided in the thematic area of the journal, or an opening is given to the published issue, or discussions are opened around emerging or current issues in the health professions. Editorials should have a length between 1000-1500 words and contain no more than 10 references. 

Letters to the editor

Document that presents a critical, analytical or interpretative position about an article published by RIICS. The editorial committee will publish those letters that make an important contribution to the discussion and will make the decision to invite the authors of the article under discussion to write a letter in response to the editor. The letters should be submitted one year after the article has been published, have a clear, concise title that refers to the article, and should be no longer than 750 words and have 10 references.

Documents not published by RIICS

Abstracts, book reviews, reports of events or congresses, presentations, bibliographies, institutional bulletins, obituaries, news, translations of articles already published in other media, documents published in repositories, academic networks or other websites, opinion columns or other similar articles.

Peer review

The publication of research, review and reflection articles must have a process of evaluation by external peers under the double-blind modality: neither the peers know the names and affiliations of the authors, nor the authors know who their evaluators are. The peers must be doctors and active researchers in the thematic of the article, or masters with thematic expertise, active research and extensive scientific production.

Ethics

RIICS has a social commitment to the scientific community of the Health Sciences, therefore it will ensure that the publication processes are transparent and rigorous, the intellectual property rights are followed according to the law and it will encourage its authors to follow good practices in research, avoid misrepresenting the results of their research and violate copyright in order to protect the reputation of the journal and not to compromise the trust of the journal and its scientific community. Frequency, language, and format

The journal is published every six months and it is launched in july and december. The journal may receive articles in Spanish and English; its publication format is electronic.

Open Access

RIICS publishes in open access. This means that, once an article has been published, anyone can have immediate access to the full text for reading, downloading, disseminating and printing without registration, subscription or payment requirements. RIICS joins to the Budapest Initiative for Open Access (2002), the Bethesda Declaration on Open Access Publishing (2003), the Berlin Declaration on Open Access (2003), and the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment -DORA- (2012).

Type of License

The Creative Commons license allowed by RIICS is Attribution Non-commercial - No Derivative License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). This type of license allows articles to be downloaded and shared with scientific communities as long as their authorship is acknowledged. Under no condition may their content be changed, modified or used for commercial purposes.

Digital Preservation

Revista de Investigación e Innovación en Ciencias de la Salud (RIICS) preserves its digital information through the "PKP Preservation Network" (PKP PN) developed by the Public Knowledge Preject (PKP). RIICS also makes permanent backups of its OJS (many copies keep things safe). The backups are kept on external equipment following the security and preservation protocols established by Fundación Universitaria María Cano

Publishing Institution and financing model

The journal is property and financed by Fundación Universitaria María Cano, a non-profit institution of higher education. Therefore, RIICS does not charge its authors for the processing of their manuscripts (Article Processing Charge - APC), but it is expected from them to have an active participation in the processes and a cooperative work for a greater diffusion and dissemination of their articles.
