Abstract Prolonged droughts and erratic rainfall are becoming increasingly common due to climate change, with serious consequences for biodiversity and jeopardizing the regeneration of threatened species. In a controlled experiment, the response of Abies hickelii seedlings to water stress was evaluated by combining two irrigation conditions (with and without water) and two light conditions (sun and shade). It was observed that the risk of mortality is five times higher in the absence of irrigation, regardless of light exposure. Without irrigation, seedlings exposed to sunlight survived approximately 54 days before total collapse, while those kept in the shade survived about 62 days. Shade reduced the wilting rate but did not compensate for the lack of water. Therefore, water availability is a critical factor for the early survival of this species. Effect of spacing on clonal teak productivity in a silvopastoral system in Costa Rica http://www.scielo.org.co/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0120-07392026000200002&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Resumen La ganadería abarca un 33% del territorio y aporta emisiones importantes de gases efecto invernadero.
Abstract Livestock farming in Costa Rica covers 33% of the territory and contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Timber trees expand environmental services and generate economic impact on livestock farming. The study aimed to determine the effect of planting density in a silvopastoral system for timber production and carbon sequestration. Over 8 years the development of teak clones under six spacings was evaluated, based on three internal tree-rows inside 6m wide strips and the trees planted every 1 m; 2 m; 3 m; 4 m; 5 m and 6 m. The basis for analysis was a strip measuring 1000 linear meters by 6 meters wide. The 3 m spacing recorded the highest production with 110 m3 in the 6000 m2, capturing 105 tons of carbon at 8 years. Highest commercial value per individual tree was recorded under 4 m spacing with US$27 and US$31. SSP optimizes space usage and allows for a 1.2-fold increase in wood production and carbon capture compared to conventional planting.
Abstract The impact of syntropic and conventional agricultural management systems on soil physical and chemical properties and the production of Coffea arabica L. var. Castillo was evaluated in two coffee-growing regions of Colombia with similar edaphoclimatic conditions, syntropic systems with different implementation periods (one year and more than ten years) were compared with conventional systems used as references. The long-term syntropic system showed significant improvements in soil quality, reflected in higher total organic matter content, increased levels of essential nutrients, a more favorable pH, and improved physical properties. However, the highest productivity was recorded in the long-term conventional system, indicating that improvements in soil quality do not immediately translate into higher yields. Overall, the results indicate that prolonged syntropic management enhances soil functionality, whereas productive responses depend on the implementation period and system design.
Abstract This study analyzed the contribution of forest income to rural livelihoods and its relationship with inequality among smallholders in the Ecuadorian Amazon Region (EAR). The research was conducted in Hatun Sumaku parish, Napo Province, through structured surveys applied to 180 rural households, predominantly in Kichwa. The study estimated the share of forest income in total household income, its socioeconomic determinants, and its effect on income distribution. Results show that the poorest households depend strongly on forest resources, obtaining up to 68% of their total income from forest-related activities, whereas higher-income groups display greater diversification toward agricultural and off-farm activities. Forest dependence was positively associated with Kichwa ethnicity and forest availability and negatively associated with credit access and higher income levels. Although forest income slightly reduced inequality, its redistributive effect remained limited, highlighting persistent structural disparities in rural Amazonian livelihoods.
Abstract The floristic diversity and structure of the San Pedro de Alejandrino tropical rainforest in Santo Domingo, Ecuador, was characterized. Six plots of 400 m² were established through systematic sampling (0.24 ha), and 215 individuals with DBH ≥ 10 cm were identified, which are distributed in 46 species, 35 genera, and 20 botanical families. Arecaceae and Meliaceae are the most representative families. The most abundant species are Wettinia aequatorialis, Pourouma guianensis, and Swietenia macrophylla, which stand out for their ecological importance (IVI). The Shannon-Wiener and Simpson indices reflect moderate-high diversity (2.40 and 0.87, respectively). The horizontal structure showed an inverted J-shaped distribution, typical of uneven-aged tropical forests undergoing regeneration. In addition, the Pretzsch index showed that the canopy is dominated by young trees. According to the results, the forest is a key area for conservation and sustainable forest management in the region.
Abstract The effects of site quality, microsites, and pre-germination treatments on seedling emergence via direct seeding were evaluated for four species from the semi-arid Chaco: Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco, Schinopsis lorentzii, Neltuma nigra, and Sarcomphalus mistol. The evaluations were conducted in control and disturbed forests, and the microsites included conditions with and without tree cover. The tetrazolium test was performed to assess seed viability. Average viability ranged from 53% to 63% among the species. A. quebracho-blanco showed higher germination in the control forest, with no significant effect of pre-germination treatment or microsite. N. nigra had a higher germination rate in the disturbed forest and with treated seeds. No germination was recorded for S. lorentzii and S. mistol. The results indicate that species have different germination requirements and that seed pretreatment could improve recruitment through direct seeding.
Abstract We evaluated the influence of site conditions in exotic Eucalyptus globulus and Acacia melanoxylon plantations, alongside shade tolerance, on the establishment of native species in the Eastern Hills of Bogotá. Seven native species were underplanted beneath the canopies of these exotic plantations, and their survival and growth were monitored for 2.5 years. Results revealed a trade-off: survival was higher for shade-tolerant species and was positively influenced by plantation density. In contrast, growth was limited by high density, canopy cover, and slope, although it was greater under A. melanoxylon. These findings demonstrate that restoration under exotic canopies is viable, but it requires careful and detailed silvicultural management to balance the facilitative effects on survival with the competition that limits the growth of native species in the medium term.
Abstract Species of the genusPteridiumhave been classified as invasive due to their influence on vegetation succession; however, their ecological role may vary depending on context. This study evaluated the influence ofPteridiumon seedling establishment and growth in an abandoned pasture located in Golconda, Serranía de los Yariguíes National Natural Park, Colombian Andes. Nine 25 m² plots were randomly established with three treatments: no-intervention control (PC), initial cutting (CH-I), and bimonthly cutting (CH-2M) over eight months. Seedling height, cover, diversity, abundance, and survival were recorded. The results indicate that the persistence of the fern favors seedling diversity and growth, whereas periodic cutting (CH-2M) increases seedling abundance but reduces diversity and survival. These findings provide technical criteria for the differentiated management ofPteridiumand support its consideration as a potentially facilitative species in ecological restoration processes in Andean ecosystems.
Abstract This study compared lichen diversity across three vegetation covers in the middle Sinú River basin (Córdoba, Colombia): a riparian forest and two tropical dry forest fragments. At each site, 10 phorophytes were sampled using a 400 cm² quadrant per individual. A total of 17 families, 35 genera, and 87 lichen morphospecies were recorded. The families Graphidaceae and Arthoniaceae, along with crustose growth form, were dominant. High compositional turnover was observed, with a dissimilarity distance greater than 80% between each pair of studied localities; only 3% of the species were shared among all three sites. The riparian vegetation stood out due to its higher species richness and number of rare species. This study provides a baseline for lichen diversity and composition in the middle Sinú region, including new records for the Colombian Caribbean and Córdoba.
Abstract The study assessed the accuracy of seven vegetation indices specifically designed for mangrove identification using Sentinel-2 imagery in San Andrés de Tumaco, Colombia. Spectral analyses, validation with reference data, and visual interpretation were conducted. The Mangrove Vegetation Index substantially overestimated the mapped area (>500%), whereas the Mangrove Index yielded the best visual results, albeit with limitations in water-dominated zones. The Normalized Difference Mangrove Index and the Mangrove Discrimination Indices effectively differentiated water and urban land covers, though challenges remained in mangrove separability. Spectral signatures revealed greater absorption in the near-infrared region (0.32), facilitating discrimination from other land covers. The findings underscore the need to adapt these indices to regional ecological conditions to improve their accuracy, providing a foundation for the development of more robust remote sensing methodologies for mangrove monitoring and conservation.
