^les^aEntre 1853 y 1885 el federalismo fue un principio de gobierno prácticamente incuestionable entre las élites colombianas. Pese a la abundante historiografía sobre el período, el significado que los actores le asignaron y el proceso político en torno a su institucionalización no han sido abordados sistemáticamente. Este trabajo revisa la historiografía y busca pistas para responder tales interrogantes. Primero describe el vacío historiográfico sobre el problema; luego lo examina en la perspectiva de la historiografía sobre la formación del Estado; en tercer lugar explora las explicaciones más corrientes sobre la adopción del federalismo; y finalmente realiza un balance y ofrece algunas perspectivas.^len^aBetween 1853 and 1885, the governing principle of federalism was practically unquestioned by Colombian elites. Despite the abundant historiography on the period, what federalism meant to different actors, and the politics of its institutionalization, have not been systematically addressed. This article reviews this historiography searching for clues with which to answer these questions. It first describes the gap in the historiography regarding the problem. Then it examines the topic from the perspective of the literature on state formation. Third, it examines the most current explanations regarding the adoption of federalism. The article ends with a discussion of where we stand on the question and offers some perspectives.
