This article studies small-scale milk-producing enterprises under the business model approach in order to understand the business logic behind these companies and assess their profitability. Studied enterprises were grouped using cluster analysis, examining the business models of the groups identified through the canvas tool and assessing the profitability of businesses by means of the CASI index. Three different business models were identified and analyzed, establishing that milk production is not profitable but plays important roles for the economy of producing families as a means of money saving and a constant flow of income. It was also identified that dairy production remains thanks to its coexistence with other activities developed by producing families and that productive diversification requires deploying different business models. In this sense, our study reveals the importance of analyzing the relationship between the different business models adopted by agricultural enterprises in future research studies.
