VALLEJO CABRERA, Franco Alirio. Advances in the production of Solanum lycopersicum Mill. tomato lines with genetic resistance to the fruit borer Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guenée 1854) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). []. , 45, 174, pp.136-146.   18--2021. ISSN 0370-3908.  https://doi.org/10.18257/raccefyn.1205.

The fruit borer Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guenée 1854) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is one of the main pests of tomato crops in Colombia reducing its production by up to 77 %. All commercial tomato varieties are susceptible to the pest. Chemical insecticides are the most used control method whose efficiency is doubtful due to the biology of the insect. Genetic resistance to this pest is poorly understood and exploited. This paper is a synthesis of the studies carried out by the research group on "Genetic improvement and vegetable production" at Universidad Nacional de Colombia in search of tomato lines with genetic resistance to the fruit borer from wild species of Solanum spp. We were able to transfer such resistance by sexual hybridization to the commercial variety UNAPAL Maravilla of the species Solanum lycopersicum. Backcrossing accompanied by selection allowed us to obtain recombinant RC4 plants with fruit borer resistance and average fruit weight close to that of the recurrent parent.
