URBANO, Lorena; MERA-VELASCO, Yamid Arley    RAMOS-ANGULO, Jovanna Vanessa. Characterization of drosophilides in the urban area of the city of Popayán (Cauca), Colombia. []. , 46, 178, pp.131-136.   07--2023. ISSN 0370-3908.  https://doi.org/10.18257/raccefyn.1588.

Individuals from the Drosophilae genus, commonly known as "small fruit flies", have been widely studied as biological models of great impact in environmental and genetic studies given their characteristic small size, short life cycle, easy maintenance, fast reproduction, and numerous offspring. However, they have not been completely characterized in tropical and inhabited zones which could impact the flies' biological development. In such context, our study focused on characterizing the presence of Drosophilae individuals in the city of Popayán and gathering information that can help as a body of scientific knowledge for other upcoming investigation projects. We collected 1,033 members of the Drosophilae genus distributed in three subgenera: Drosophila, Dorsilopha, and Sophophora, and three species, D. replete, D. buskii, and D. melanogaster in four communes with very similar biotic characteristics, a maximum temperature of 23°C and a maximum humidity of 85%. These findings are the first evidence of the coexistence of three Drosophilae species in the urban zone of Popayán.
