This review article presents an overview of the many light-based technologies that have become indispensable in our daily lives and will continue to impact them, as well as the world economy. To motivate the formulation of a national plan for the development of the research and appropriation of photonics technology in Colombia, the general purposes of some regional and national research and development initiatives in optics and photonics are presented.
