This article intends to clarify the definitions of plagiarism and related concepts, emphasizing on the pertinent judicial and legal implications. Physicians, and specially surgeons, ignore the implications ofdisregarding the ethical and legal aspects of plagiarism. Not knowing the law does not exempt from the legal responsibilities and the corresponding sanctions. Without disregarding the historical, doctrinal, jurisprudential, ethical, and moral antecedents, the article ends with reflections on control and on the importance that it has for the institutions of higher education of the country and for the authors of scientific papers.
