Abstract

VERGARA LUJAN, Omaira. Representations of Academic Writing in a Foreign Language Undergraduate Program. Leng. [online]. 2015, vol.43, n.2, pp.359-386. ISSN 0120-3479.

This study stems on the belief that in order to transform educational practices, it is necessary to identify how the objects of pedagogical action are constructed. To improve the learning of writing in higher education, it is important to identify the conceptions about writing on this educational level. With the aim of exploring this issue, the definitions of the concept ofacademic writing, provided by 248 students and professors involved in a Foreign Language Program, were analyzed and compared through content analysis. The results reveal a lack of elaboration of the concept of academic writing; the absence of a common shared definition, and also some important differences between the two groups, especially in terms of the functions recognized for this type of writing. Possible implications of these representations for the teaching and learning of academic writing are considered in the conclusions of this article

Keywords : academic writing; academic literacy; social representations.
