Direct and indirect speech are the most studied forms of reported speech. In studying this forms, several discursive and syntactic aspects are analyzed in different language varieties. In this paper, some findings on the use of reported speech among speakers of Spanish from Medellin are presented. Data were taken from the corpus PRESEEA-Medellin. It has been found that direct and indirect reported speech can vary regarding the way they are introduced, and that the choice between one form and the other depends on the speaker’s communicative purpose, according to whether the speaker wishes to show involvement or distance from the content been reported.
