The Colombian Sign Language (LSC) is undergoing a process of language planning for academic purposes which revolves basically around vocabulary enrichment and modernization, with little attention to the discursive level. The aim of this article is to present the lexicogrammar of definition in LSC. First the importance of definition in science is highlighted. Then a presentation is made of the structure of definition in languages with a long scientific tradition exemplified in Spanish. Finally a sample of definitions produced by Deaf people before and after metalinguistic reflections are presented and analyzed in order to discover generalizations regarding definition in this language.
