Abstract

This article describes how the topics of the textbook Biárea 3 of Natural Sciences, third grade, are addressed from a genre-based approach. By means of a qualitative method and a case-study design, the generic structure and discourse of the texts contained in the textbook were analyzed in the light of the pedagogy of textual genres, to establish their distinctive features. The most frequent groups of genres are: reports, stories and explanations. Additionally, complex terms, nominalizations, process synthesis and use of images were identified in the discourse of the textbook. These features often hinder comprehension for inexperienced readers, thereby demanding a continuous scaffolding from the teacher.
