Abstract

LONDONO AGUDELO, Ana María  and  GUZMAN SOSSA, Yesica Alejandra. Identity Politics and Criticism from the Left. A State of the Art. Estud. Polit. [online]. 2023, n.66, pp.203-228.  Epub June 28, 2023. ISSN 0121-5167.  https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.espo.n66a09.

This article presents a state of the art of the criticisms made from “the left” to identity politics, understood as the set of political positions and academic reflections that question the principles, values and implementation of universal citizenship of liberal democracies. Based on a hermeneutical paradigm, a documentary review and an exegetical exercise, criticisms are identified and grouped according to their object along four lines: i) primacy of recognition and “authenticity” as a class displacement; ii) primacy of recognition as redistribution displacement; iii) primacy of recognition as reification of identities; iv) ideological character of identity. It is concluded that, within the left, there are multiple and dissimilar positions regarding identity politics, which stem from the challenge of not renouncing their universalist project and, at the same time, avoiding falling into an abstraction of the concrete and particular differences of the oppressed groups within the system.
