Drug trafficking is deemed an illegal activity and a national security concern for many states. However, it becomes more complex and difficult to fight as it adapts and expands worldwide. This article provides the state of the art in drug trafficking from various perspectives to deepen the understanding of this phenomenon that operates beyond national borders. First, it demonstrates that drug trafficking works in a global framework; therefore, it analyzes and reviews the literature to identify the factors that drive drug trafficking globally with intertwined dynamics. Second, it endeavors to delve into the transnational notion of how drug trafficking operates and posits the need for a broad, comprehensive description of the multidimensional perspective, establishing the seven dimensions of globalization.

Keywords : Drug trafficking; globalization; transnational organized crime; multidimensional perspective; transnational phenomenon.
