Abstract

AHUMADA, Concepción Amador; LAVALLE, Mónica Hanna  and  CHAMORRO, Marilyn Villadiego. GESTATIONAL SYPHILIS: DISEASE OF INTEREST IN PUBLIC HEALTH, CÓRDOBA-COLOMBIA, 2015. Rev Cuid [online]. 2017, vol.8, n.1, pp.1449-1458. ISSN 2216-0973.  https://doi.org/10.15649/cuidarte.v8i1.350.

Introduction:

In 2010, the department of Córdoba notified of 240 cases of gestational syphilis and started an aggressive strategy to control this disease of interest in public health; this study compared the behavior of gestational syphilis.

Materials and Methods:

This descriptive, retrospective study analyzed the information contained in 97 cases of gestational syphilis confirmed during the first 15 epidemiological weeks from 2012 to 2015.

Results:

The age group most affected was from 15 to 35 years, with predominance of 24 years of age; 41% of the maternal participants had serological test results during the first trimester of pregnancy; 14% of the maternal participants reported having had syphilis, 97% began treatment with Benzathine penicillin, 69% of the sexual contacts were not diagnosed or treated. Every year, between three and five of every six cases are incidents showing increased gestational syphilis, with a rate of 0.87 for every 1000 live births.

Discussion:

The prevalence of gestational syphilis reflects low coverage of the program on sexually transmitted infections. Epidemiological surveillance is passive, needs more management, prevention, catchment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow up to comply with the goal of eradicating gestational syphilis, making it necessary to integrate actions from control programs with the early detection program of pregnancy alterations.

Conclusions:

Gestational syphilis remains prevalent in the city of Montería identifying between one and five cases in each epidemiological week.
