Abstract
TELLEZ VARGAS, Jorge E. (SSRI DISCONTINUATION SYNDROME). rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 1999, vol.28, n.1, pp.45-58. ISSN 0034-7450.
When patients stop long-term therapy with antidepressants, mood stabilizers or antipsychotics, discontinuation symptoms frequently occur. Their range in severity, from mild somatic distress and gastrointestinal symptoms to serious cognitive impairment, may lead to hospitalization, which can appear when monoamine oxidase inhibitors are discontinued. Although severe, these non-specific symptoms are distinctly different from the classic withdrawal syndrome associated with sedative hypnotics such as alcohol and barbiturates. Existing hypotheses about mecanisms of Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Discontinuation Syndrome (SSRI) are here reviewed.
