Introduction: Support psychotherapy (ST) is the most used treatment modality in psychiatry. Objective: The present work explains the basic theoretical and technical principles that support the practice of ST. Method: A bibliographical review is carried out, in which the terms, philosophy, indications and scope of support psychotherapy is defined. Development: The fundamental technical strategies in this psychotherapy type are presented, such as case formulation, setting, therapeutic listening, therapeutic alliance, the facilitating atmosphere, transference management and interpretation in ST. Clinical examples are given.
