Abstract

PEREZ, Daiana; SEPLOVICH, Julieta; GUSMAN, Natalia  and  VIDAL, Violeta. Creating food alternatives ¡n four Argentinean provinces. Rev. colomb. soc. [online]. 2018, vol.41, n.2, pp.21-40. ISSN 0120-159X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcs.v41n2.70260.

The paper carries out a reflection on different processes aimed at creating alternatives to the current food system in our country: the seed exchange fairs in Misiones; the training experience in agroecology promoted by the Landless Rural Workers' Union (UST, according to its acronym in Spanish) in Mendoza; the first agroecological fair in the city of Córdoba; and the construction of productive, economic, and knowledge-generation alternatives in Entre Ríos. To this effect, we first frame the Argentinean agri-food context and then describe certain productive and historical peculiarities of the provinces selected for research. Though the experiences are diverse, they have something in common: all four of them seek to innovate and create on the basis of production, consumption, exchange, and shaping of new relations between men and women, and between them and nature. While their futures are uncertain, they are sure of one thing: the prevailing relations have led to a civilization crisis.

The methodology used included review of the bibliography, interviews, and participant observation in the context of different research and militancy projects. On the one hand, the sections regarding the provinces of Córdoba and Entre Ríos are part of two PhD dissertation progress reports, carried out with the support of the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (Conicet): "Alternative food systems in the context of provincial agrarian conflict: the case of the Córdoba agroecological fair" and "Experiences of family producers in the construccion of socio-productive alvernatives in Entre Ríos". On the other hand, the section on the province of Misiones draws on the results of an undergraduate thesis in Social Anthropology regarding the Misiones Farmers' Seed Movement, and the section on Mendoza is framed in a university outreach project with the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, which carries out joint activities with the UST.

Keywords : agribusiness; agroecology; consumers; food sovereignty; food systems; resistance movements; rural producers.
