Abstract

MONTES, JOSÉ JOAQUÍN. THINKING WITH OTHERS: FIGURATIONS AS TOOLS TO DESCRIBE MULTIPLICITY. Maguare [online]. 2022, vol.36, n.1, pp.161-186.  Epub Jan 12, 2023. ISSN 0120-3045.  https://doi.org/10.15446/mag.v36n1.100873.

This article proposes thinking with others as a methodology that involves the production of figurations: Sets of text and images. Explaining how different worlds overlap and intertwine in the same materialities is a constant challenge for ethnographic descriptions of current socio-environmental conflicts. I delve into the elaboration of images and textual metaphors that create figurations. I alternate the description of successive figurations and combine it with a methodological reflection that allow us to think with images in a non-instrumental way. Thinking with human and more than human agencies -interlocutors, texts, pencils, paper, and body- helps us to figure complex concepts as multiplicity, it overcomes limitations of our current academic practices, and it opens opportunities to produce anthropological figurations, both in collaboration with artists and with other materials, through research-creation projects.

Keywords : Anthropocene; collaborative methodologies; figuration; image; ontologies; pluriverse; research-creation; research-creation; thinking with others.
