Abstract

CORTES BELLO, Yenny Milena. Linguistic emergence or revitalisation? Reflections and contradictions on Providence's sign language. Forma. func. [online]. 2023, vol.36, n.2, e1071.  Epub June 02, 2023. ISSN 0120-338X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v36n2.101071.

This article reviews research on the linguistic emergence of a «sign language» on the island of Providence (PISL), probably due to genetic causes. Additionally, we present the context of origin of this possible language and the history of the (deaf) community of Providence. We also address the conditions of emergence and the proposed stages of consolidation of a sign language, in order to discuss some significant gaps in the above-mentioned research. Finally, we outline the current situation of the deaf community in Providence within the broader context of Colombian Sign Language (LSC).

Keywords : linguistic emergence; Providence Sign Language; linguistic revitalization; consolidated sign language; home signs, pidgins.
