This investigation article focus in characterizing the reading practices of non-fictional texts accessed by young people with intellectual disabilities. The study is framed within the interpretive paradigm, using a qualitative method of descriptive scope. Therefore, data collection was conducted through focus groups in especial education establishments in the Valparaíso Region in Chile, involving teachers, fathers, mothers, and young people with intellectual disabilities (ID). For data processing, we applied content analysis by the NVIVO 12 program. In this way, the results indicate that the practices situate in three areas: 1) Reading modalities. 2) Reading formats. 3) Spaces and moments of reading. On the other hand, among their readings, genres that refer mainly to short texts, such as legends, predominate; of an informative nature, such as news, magazines and newspapers, as well as works of graphic narrative, such as manga and comics.
Keywords : functional reading; mental deficiency; accessibility for people with disabilities; youth books; picture book.
