Abstract
INES PARRA, DORA and ARANGO BAYER, GLORÍA LUCÍA. Validity and reliability of the communication and coordination scales to measure the inter-dependent nursing role. av.enferm. [online]. 2010, vol.28, n.1, pp.51-62. ISSN 0121-4500.
Objective of the study: To evaluate the validity and reproducibility of the Communication and Coordination scales of the nurse-doctor ICU instrument designed by Shortell et al. Methods: a scale validation methodological study was conducted through facial validity tests and content validity tests with an experts' panel. The sample for constituting validity and internal consistency was of 295 in-class nurses and of 111 nurses for test-retest reproducibility. Results: The acceptance index reached 100%; an index of 0,82 was obtained in appropriateness and relevancy for the communication scale and 0,84 in appropriateness and 0,88 in relevancy for the coordination scale. Three factors were found for both scales. A Cronbach´s alpha of 0,92 was obtained for communication and 0,82 for Coordination; the inter-class correlation coefficient was 0,79 for Communication and 0,63 for Coordination respectively. Discussion: The facial validity index was similar to other studies and the content index was high. The factors found are mentioned in the communication and coordination aspects related literature. The Cronbach´s alpha values were higher than those found by other researchers; the Inter-class correlation coefficients were excellent and good. Conclusions: The results show that the instrument is valid, reliable and reproducible in the Colombian context, based on which it is recommended to use such instrument to study coordination and communication as indicators of the independent role of nursing.
