Abstract

GUERRERO GAMBOA, Nidia Sandra  and  TOBOS DE ALVAREZ, Luisa Sofía. Care of an ostomized child: changes in family. av.enferm. [online]. 2013, vol.31, n.1, pp.59-71. ISSN 0121-4500.

Objective: This study aimed at describing the impact of having an ostomized child on the family dynamics, lifestyle and care preservation and traditional rules in the population of the Program of Comprehensive Care of Ostomized Child and Adolescent and Families of the School of Nursery of the National University of Colombia in Fundación Hospital de la Misericordia, Bogotá, Colombia. Methodology: This quantitative study analyzed the answers of 94 parents who are caregivers of their ostomized children. Three variables of the basic conditioning factors (FCB) and that affect health and diseased experience of people were considered according to Orem. Outcomes: Care of ostomized children depends on the inclusion of technical cares in activities of the family, thus transforming traditional care practices (53%); parents adopt a family traditional model, in which the mother takes care and socializes (64.63%), the father is the provider (47.5%); cry (79.26%), silence (68.29%) are main forms of expression of negative emotions; the religious practices play an important role in families facing that experience (90%); the change of address is not a direct consequence of the child physical condition (44%). Discussion: caring an ostomized child entails a change in functions and family responsibilities. Health team recommendations generate changes in the raising practices; expressing negative feelings is not easy; religion is an important support in giving the child health condition sense. Conclusion: The presence of the stoma not only affects the intestinal passage of the child, but the family daily life.
