Abstract

FERNANDEZ, Virginia Laura. FEMININE REFLECTIONS ON LATIN AMERICAN ECLAC ECONOMIC THOUGHT. DIALOGUES WITH MARIA DA CONCEIÇÃO TAVARES. Cuad. Econ. [online]. 2021, vol.40, n.spe84, pp.853-873.  Epub Sep 23, 2022. ISSN 0121-4772.  https://doi.org/10.15446/cuad.econ.v40n84.88471.

This paper presents some insights concerning the contribution of Latin American ECLAC economic thought through the use of feminine oral history, in the voice of Maria da Conceição Tavares, one of the most outstanding economists worldwide. The main source, unpublished, arises from an interview that Tavares gave the author in May 2019. The perspective of Tavares, a feminine reference in a markedly masculine professional environment, is questioned regarding three aspects: the main ECLAC contribution to the history of economic thought; Tavares' contribution to this theoretical body; and the current main challenge of Latin American economies. Additionally, the main theoretical elements of this thought are outlined: the centre-periphery system, the deterioration of the terms of trade and structural heterogeneity, as well as the discussion between the concentrating dynamism of Brazil proposed by Tavares and Serra, and Furtado's stagnationism. Finally, the author reflects on the perceptions regarding gender issues that arise from the interview.
