Abstract

ESQUINAS ALCAZAR, José T.. AGRICULTURAL BIODIVERSITY, BIOTECHNOLOGIES AND BIOETHICS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST HUNGER AND POVERTY. rev.latinoam.bioet. [online]. 2009, vol.9, n.1, pp.102-113. ISSN 1657-4702.

In this article we will concentrate ourselves in a type of natural resources: the agricultural biological diversity; a group of technologies: the biotechnologies; and a form to make decisions on moral bases: the bioethics. We will identify challenges, potentials and risks which we faced in these areas to feed the humanity. And we will conclude with a positive example of how the International Community, through the Food and Agriculture Organization FAO, has known to consider these challenges, negotiating and approving with ethical criteria an international legal frame to increase the potential and to reduce the risks: the International Treaty on Fitogenetic Resources for Agriculture and the Food, that is called to contribute decisively to the construction of a sustainable planet and without hunger.

Keywords : Biological diversity; biotechnologies; bioethics.
