Resumen Maya Deren (1917-1961) foi uma cineasta de mediados do século XX que chegou a ser considerada a “Mãe” do cinema experimental e de vanguarda dos Estados Unidos, graças a filmes como Meshes of the Afternoon (1943), At Land (1944), Ritual in Transfigured Time (1946). Entre 1947 e 1954, esta artista realizou quatro viagens a Haiti que lhe permitiram adentrar-se no conhecimento da religião vodu, dando por resultado diversos trabalhos. Primeiro, um libro sobre a religião haitiana, Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti, publicado em 1953, e, segundo, um material fílmico de quase 9 horas que, conquanto Deren nunca deu a conhecer em vida, veio à tona pública em 1981 a maneira de documentário. Neste trabalho examinam-se algumas das representações e interpretações que sobre o vodu construiu e legou esta cineasta pioneira.
