Abstract
DE PAZ TRUEBA, Yolanda Edith and BRACAMONTE, Lucía. Mobility and Geographical Circulation. Children and Young People in the Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina), 1880-1919. Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2018, vol.10, n.20, pp.196-236. ISSN 2145-132X. https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v10n20.69296.
In the towns within the province of Buenos Aires, it was usual to send the children to be raised by friends or relatives, or to send them to asylums or even to leave them in charge of Defensorías de Menores. This paper explores the different interventions that a variety of social actors, institutions and the State performed over such situations within the late years of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century; we specially focus on the children mobility that such strategies implied. The research presented is based on the analysis of scattered elements in documents pertaining to Juzgados de Menores y de Paz, official documentation from the asylum institutions and newspaper articles. We conclude that there was widespread concern regarding the situation of those minors, who were considered at risk, which enabled said interventions. As a consequence of these processes, an important mobility of children and young people was registered across different geographical spaces and sociability networks.
