Abstract

JIMENEZ GONZALEZ, Camilo Arturo  and  BERTI, Natalia Teresa. Origins of Spatial Fragmentation in Bogotá, 1940-1970. Contributions to a Reflection on Latin American Cities. Rev. Ciudades Estados Política [online]. 2022, vol.9, n.1, pp.107-119.  Epub Mar 30, 2023. ISSN 2462-9103.

This article problematizes the notion of spatial fragmentation in Latin American cities. To achieve this, it addresses the issue of urban disarticulation from a semiotic and so-ciohistorical approach to the city of Bogotá. It presents the roots of this phenomenon and its main expressions in the urban centrality of the Colombian capital between the 40s and 70s. It is concluded that fragmentation is not a typical phenomenon of neoliberal urbanism but one that originated in the conflicting and excluding modernization of the city in the first decades of the 20th century. New forces of change threatened the historical associative structures. The study suggests theoretical and methodological elements to establish alternative forms of socio-spatial comparison and dialogue between different regional urban references.

Keywords : Latin America; urban centers; urban history; semiology; urban sociology.
