Recent years have witnessed progress in management of patients with dementia, thanks to implementation and development of brain imaging, especially funcional srudies to elucídate biochemical physiological and electrical properties. Differential diagnosis of cognitive disturbances will have a broader basis. Among functional studies, brain perfusión SPECT allows assessment of regional blood supply, through radiactive tracers which indirectly show metabolic activity and its alteration. This technique differentiates fearures of several types of dementia: Alzheimer, Vascular and fronto-temporal lesions, AIDS and Others. Additional ad vantages of SPECT are availability and reasonable cost.
