Abstract
MENDOZA BERMUDEZ, Constanza. Sociology and Mental Health: A Review of their Association. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2009, vol.38, n.3, pp.555-573. ISSN 0034-7450.
Introduction: The relationship between the fields of mental health and social sciences may be very valuable, especially when wanting to achieve a more integral approach to the concepts of health and mental disease. Objectives: To review and discuss general aspects of sociology and their linkage to mental health and psychiatry. Method: Reviewing of sources and relevant theoretical currents. Conclusions: Historically, moments of approachment and distance between both sciences have been perceived. Currently an attitude of interdisciplinarity should be generated, based on the acknowledgement of the multi-causality of psychiatric disorders, the need of epidemiological research in populations and the challenge of psychotherapeutic models integrating the community
Keywords : Sociology; psychiatry; mental disorder; prejudice.
