Abstract

MONCADA, Jesús Salvador. The University: A Historical-Philosophical Approach. Ideas y Valores [online]. 2008, vol.57, n.137, pp.131-148. ISSN 0120-0062.

Specialization has led to the breakdown of knowledge with the current university system to blame. This is a pressing issue worldwide. The reasons include social issues, educational models and the complexities of academic life. In contrast, this review explores the model of universities prevalent during medieval times in terms of teaching, research, community service, internationalization and autonomy, all pointing to an educational par excellence.

Keywords : University; Middle Age; Studium generale.
