Abstract
MONTALI, Guido. Youth and Political Participation in Argentina. A Generational Reading Forty Years after Democratic Recovery (1983-2023). Estud. Polit. [online]. 2023, n.68, pp.223-249. Epub Dec 14, 2023. ISSN 0121-5167. https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.espo.n68a09.
The article reconstructs, in a generational perspective and based on specialized literature, some ways in which the political participation of young people has been configured in Argentina since the democratic recovery in 1983. The objective is to carry out a periodization that shows forms of participation based on the identification of generational connections present at each moment. While these connections are not the only ones possible, nor exhaustive or exclusive, they do allow for the construction of an interpretation that links socio-historical situations with specific ways in which participation was configured. For this purpose, the concepts of youth, generations and political participation are specified and articulated, elucidating the assumed approach, and then some specific manifestations of young people’s political participation since 1983 are described. From this, four periods are identified: i) the 1980’s and the democratic transition; ii) the 1990’s and participation in the context of neoliberalism; iii) the emergence of pro-government youth militancy during the Kirchnerist governments; and iv) the emergence of feminist and environmental collectives since 2016.
