Abstract
SUAREZ PINZON, Ivonne. Darien province and Panamá isthmus: Three centuries in the heart of disputes for capitalist expansion. Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.1, pp.17-50. ISSN 0122-2066.
The intellectual adventure of this article is to understand the complex process of explorations and struggles of the colonial powers to dominate the geostrategic spaces of Darién and Panamá, in order to build an inter-oceanic communication between the Atlantic and Pacific. The consciousness of the past represented in centuries of domination, brings to the understanding of the past-present in the same region. For many analysts, deep and recurrent crises experienced in this passenger area were generated and are still further deepened by the United States, which needs to build a new interoceanic canal along the Darien route, drawn by the French in the nineteenth century. A considerable amount of documentation as yet unexplored, sheds light on this historic region still poorly understood both on the processes of its colonial evolution and on some reasons of the current conflict.
Keywords : Colombia; Colonialism; Darien; Panamá.
