This work seeks to identify and examine the way the so-called "popular sectors" of Pasto gave shape to social, political, economic and cultural dynamics during the Independence era. For this purpose, the paper analyzes their structure, the representations they had of the city and the forms of control exerted over these groups by the elite. It also determines their role in the dynamics of the city through their own forms of religious, social and economic organization. In this regard, the popular sectors found urban spaces where they could express their divergences and their sense of the city: stores, brotherhoods, jails, etc.
