Abstract
DIAZ JARAMILLO, José Abelardo. Social Elite and Crisis in Fusagasugá. The Impact of the 1929 Economic Recession From a Local Perspective. Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2014, vol.19, n.2, pp.499-528. ISSN 0122-2066.
Records reveal the growth Fusagasugá in the late nineteenth century as a result of coffee beans boom reported for the Sumapaz region which, in turn, stimulated the consolidation of the new social elite whose objective was to attain political hegemony and gain cultural spaces in the city, promoting practices around the idea of civilization. However, the global economic recession of 1929 brought about a social crisis in Fugagasugá that resulted in local situations, forcing the social elite to react by promoting strategies (discourses and policies) aimed at preserving the ideal society that had been cultivated before. Therefore, this paper has two objectives: first, to identify the impact that an international economic event had in the urban context a coffee-producing town located at the Colombian Midwest, and, secondly, to analyze the reaction of the social elite to the new realities resulting from the 1929 crisis.
