Abstract
LANDINI, Gabriela. National Parks and the Configuration of a Tourist Destination: Socio-Territorial Transformations in San Martín de los Andes, Argentina (1937-1955). Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2021, vol.26, n.1, pp.71-110. Epub Dec 30, 2020. ISSN 0122-2066. https://doi.org/10.18273/revanu.v26n1-2021003.
The creation of protected areas in Argentina started at the beginning of the 20th century with a strong influence of the North American model and was consolidated with the formation of the Directorate of National Parks (1934). In this article, we analyze the process of creating a tourist place in San Martín de los Andes area as a result of the inter- ventions promoted since the establishment of the Lanín National Park (1937). The method- ology consisted of the analysis of specialized bibliography and different sources: archives of the National Parks Administration, National Censuses and National Territories Cen- suses; and tourism guides and other publications that circulated during the period. The start of tourist activity in a region that was politically and economically marginal, brought a particular spatialization dynamic, which included the promotion of an urbanization that went, paradoxically, hand in hand with the conservation of large areas of land as reser- voirs of a “unaltered”nature.
