Abstract
JIMENEZ MARTINEZ, Eloy. Around the population of Mexico-Tenochtitlan in 1519. Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2022, vol.27, n.1, pp.125-152. Epub Dec 23, 2021. ISSN 0122-2066. https://doi.org/10.18273/revanu.v27n1-2022004.
This article aims to contribute to the study of the approximate number of inhabitants of Mexico-Tenochtitlan in 1519. This work commences with a brief introduction which states the difficulties in reconstructing the population volume of Tenochtitlan-Tlatelolco, due to the absence of pre-Hispanic censuses on it, as well as the different conclusions reached by different authors.
A historiographic analysis is carried out of the main studies that refer to the number of inhabitants of the city. Next, a method is adopted to compare the population densities that are inferred from these publications with those of cities then and now, both Old and New World, to logically establish a density for the Tenochtitlan- Tlatelolco set. And with this result, taking into account the area of the city at 1519, conclude that it was inhabited by between 75,000 - 95,000 people on that date.
