Abstract
MAZA, Lucía Romina. Municipal bureaucracies: the professionalization and institutionalization of the Public Works Office in the city of Río Cuarto (1870-1911). Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2022, vol.27, n.2, pp.131-155. Epub Dec 01, 2022. ISSN 0122-2066. https://doi.org/10.18273/revanu.v27n2-2022006.
The changes brought about during the second half of the 19th century implied socio-economic and political modifications that were reflected in the urban space. In an attempt to control these changes, a bureaucracy was created within the State, made up of professionals such as engineers and urban planners, capable of regulating and supervising public works. From a local perspective centered on the city of Río Cuarto, the following work seeks to provide an outline around this theme, based on the creation of a municipal bureaucracy in charge of the layout and construction of the urban plant. During the last third of 1800, a growing institutionalization and professionalization of municipal positions related to public works began, whose control of positions and delimitation of activities would lead in 1911 to the creation of the Office of Public Works and Cadastre.
