This research aimed to identify the participation of the dimensions of the academic burnout syndrome in the variability of mental health problems in a group of young university students from the Colombian Caribbean. Through an explanatory cross - sectional study, a sample of 204 students of a public university that was administered the Maslach Burnout Inventory Student Survey and the 90-R Symptom Inventory. The results indicate that the more exhaustion, cynicism and ineffectiveness increase the symptoms related to mental health problems, the same way, the severity or level of burnout is proportional to mental health problems. It is concluded that the exhaustion is relevant in the presence of symptoms, and the high level of academic burnout is of great clinical importance, coexisting with different symptoms.
