BERNAL, Nubia Hernández; BECERRA, Julián Barragán and MOJICA, Claudia Moreno. Nursing intervention for the wellbeing of caregivers of patients in home care. Rev Cuid [online]. 2018, vol.9, n.1, pp.2045-2058. ISSN 2216-0973. https://doi.org/10.15649/cuidarte.v9i1.479.
Introduction
Caregivers of individuals with chronic disease require interventions aimed at their own care, knowledge, and home care approach. The aim of this study was to evaluate the implementation of a nursing intervention in the wellbeing of caregivers of patients in need of home care in health institutions in Boyacá, Colombia.
Materials and Methods
This was quasi-experimental study with pre-test and post-test, in a group of 72 caregivers. The intervention group had three educational sessions based on Swanson’s Theory of Caring; the control group received conventional intervention. The study used the nursing results classification instrument: emotional health of the principal caregiver, stressing factors of the family caregiver, spiritual health, performance of the principal caregiver, preparation of the principal home care caregiver, possible resistance of the family caregiver, and role execution.
Results
The intervention had an effect on the wellbeing of the caregiver of individuals in need of home care.
Discussion
The control group evidenced difficulty for wellbeing with traditional care, while caring for the patient.
Conclusions
Nursing interventions structured on theory show achievements in care for the wellbeing of individuals under special conditions; it is necessary to establish institutional strategies focused on humanized nursing care with disciplinary support.
