Abstract

SENA DA SILVEIRA, Emerson José. Religion and Modern Society: The Unrealized Modernity and Gnosis Immanence. Theol. Xave. [online]. 2018, vol.68, n.185, pp.207-235. ISSN 0120-3649.  https://doi.org/10.11144/javeriana.tx68-185.rsmmri.

This article aims to present two notions that are not well known in the religion sciences and in theology: “unrealized modernity” and “immanence of gnosis”, by Bruno Latour and Eric Voegelin. What theoretical contributions do these two ideas give to the understanding of the religious phenomenon in modern-contemporary society? As a general hypothesis, this article defends that both notions are useful conceptual tools to comprehend the status of being religious in the complex-modern society. In order to give an answer to such problem, the article is based on the partial bibliographic review methodology.

Keywords : Unrealized Modernity; Gnosis; Complex societies; Religion; Philosophy of Religion; Secularization.
