Abstract
ROCHA RODRIGUEZ, CECILIA; SANTIAGO SARMIENTO, NURYS and BORRE-ORTIZ, YEIS MIGUEL. Family functionality and academic performance in health sciences students: a systematic review. Salud, Barranquilla [online]. 2021, vol.37, n.2, pp.465-487. Epub May 16, 2022. ISSN 0120-5552. https://doi.org/10.14482/sun.37.2.610.23.
Objective:
to identify the factors of family functionality, associated with the academic performance of health sciences students at the higher education level, as reported in the literature.
Materials and Method:
a systematic review of the literature was carried out in the following databases: PubMed (MedLine), ProQuest, SciELO, and Google Scholar, using key descriptors, selection criteria, and search limits during the review process. 23 documents were selected as the final input for the analysis.
Results:
in addition to the descriptive findings of the studies, positive and negative factors emerged that constitute explanatory categories of the existing association between family functionality and academic performance in health sciences students in higher education.
Conclusion:
the scientific literature on family functionality and its association with academic performance in university students, although has been significantly increasing, has developed from different perspectives. Greater integration and research studies that include the family and the university as close and developmental environments for students are required.
