Abstract
JIMENEZ GIRALDO, Dora Elena and SALDARRIAGA ISAZA, Carlos Adrián. Social accounting matrix for the agricultural sector considering the size of the producer units and the armed conflict. Rev.fac.cienc.econ. [online]. 2022, vol.30, n.2, pp.21-41. Epub Dec 30, 2022. ISSN 0121-6805. https://doi.org/10.18359/rfce.6198.
Social accounting matrices capture the economic and social structure of a country, allowing both sectoral and general equilibrium analyses. The objective of this article is to describe the procedure followed for the construction of a social accounting matrix with emphasis on the Colombian agricultural sector, for the year 2014, according to the most recent data available. Among others, the main sources of information for this procedure are the utilization and supply matrices, the integrated economic accounts, data from the national agricultural census, and the armed conflict incidence index. The matrix constructed emphasizes the following aspects: (i) main crops: coffee, rice, plantain, corn, potato, and cassava; (ii) size of agricultural production units: large, medium, and small; (iii) armed conflict; and (iv) location of households: rural and urban. The social accounting matrix obtained in this work contains information on the interrelationship between the different agents of the Colombian economy, highlighting the structure of the Colombian agricultural sector according to the main crops, the size of the production units, and the incidence of armed conflict at the regional level. This matrix serves, among others, as input for the study of the different elements covered by the agrarian policy derived from the Comprehensive Rural Reform of the 2016 Peace Agreement.
