Abstract

Based on the experience acquired by the author in more than twenty years of work in Cuba and other Latin American countries in diverse programs of ecological, environmental and territorial zoning at regional and local level, in this paper are presented some recent theoretical and methodological approaches to territorial zoning and their role in the environmental planning and management. Likewise it is indicated the importance of geography and geographers in the territorial zoning as part of multidisciplinary teams, and the use of new technologies such as Geographical Information Systems GIS.
