Abstract

CUADRA, Dante Edin. Theory of geography: reflections on the identity of the discipline. Perspectiva Geográfica [online]. 2013, vol.18, n.2, pp.325-346.  Epub June 11, 2024. ISSN 0123-3769.

Geography is a science within which controversial concepts underlie, which deserve to be analyzed and placed in their correct places, to avoid skepticism as to its cognitive value and epistemological consistency. In this regard, there have been taken from geographical literature some of the issues that often resurface and cause controversy among geographers of different ideologies (positivist, historicist, Marxist, humanist and postmodern), such as: "geography or geographies?", "new geographies?", "crisis, conflicts, dualisms and dichotomies of geography", "divisions of geography" and "approaches or trends in the discipline". The central question that is attempted to answer throughout this paper is: is the identity of Geography strengthened through the differences and debates that occur inside it or, conversely do these fragment and impoverish it?

Keywords : Epistemology; geography; history of scientific thought.
