Abstract

FERNANDEZ-DROGUETT, Roberto. Sites of memory of the dictatorship in Chile. Incomplete memorialization in the Civic District of Santiago. Bitácora Urbano Territorial [online]. 2015, vol.25, n.1, pp.131-136. ISSN 0124-7913.  https://doi.org/10.15446/bitacora.v1n25.47588.

Since the return to democracy in 1990, the memorialization of public space by building places of memory has been a way of addressing both symbolic reparations to victims, such as installing a culture of "never again" to ensure that human rights abuses that occurred during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990), not repeated. As noted by several authors, memorialization of public space through the memory sites has had remarkable progress. However, this article argues that this process of memorialization has been partial and inadequate in the Civic District of the city, which is not consistent with its importance as a public space, or to the facts that occurred when was the coup d'état in 1973. For support this interpretation, urban interventions in this environment are analyzed and some hypotheses for understanding the causes of this incomplete memorializa-tion are proposed.

Keywords : public space; sites of memory; postdictatorship.
