Abstract

RODRIGUEZ-ALONSO, Raquel  and  SIMON-TENORIO, Susana. Planning opportunities in periurban space. Cases of Aranjuez and Ciudad Real. Bitácora Urbano Territorial [online]. 2016, vol.26, n.1, pp.63-72. ISSN 0124-7913.  https://doi.org/10.15446/bitacora.v26n1.43164.

The peri-urban agricultural areas, subject to encroachment by the urban front advancement, have been particularly affected by the expansion process of cities developed in Spain in recent years. Urban and land policies, and the tools developing them, have had, and still have a key role within this process. In many cases, tools for land planning and management have been designed ignoring these territories' productive, ecological and cultural functions. Analyzing current acting tools in Ciudad Real and Aranjuez, two mid-sized towns of interior Spain with agrarian tradition, will allow assessing their validity and short-comings as well as opportunities in protecting and enhancing peri-urban agricultural spaces.

Keywords : agrarian areas; land use planning; millennium ecosystem assessment.
