Abstract
ROMAN-VALENCIA, CÉSAR and RUIZ-C., RAQUEL I.. A new species of Hemibrycon (Characiformes: Characidae) from Atrato River basin, northwestern Colombia. Caldasia [online]. 2007, vol.29, n.1, pp.121-131. ISSN 0366-5232.
A new fish species of the genus Hemibrycon is described for the Atrato river basin, northwestern Colombia. The species can be distinguished from other species of the genus by its small size (<31 mm standard length), a dark lateral band, the flat shape of the dorsal edge of the orbit, in having the ventral edge of the upper jaw flat, and unequal jaws (upper longer than the lower), with long pelvic fins that reach to the anal-fin origin, and low numbers of vertebrae and branched anal-fin rays. Ecological data of the aquatic habitat of the new taxon are presented and a key to species of Hemibrycon from Colombia is provided.
