Abstract
DE CONTI DOREA, JOANA. AN ETHNOGRAPHY OF THE PIERRE VERGER FOUNDATION'S ARCHIVES: DIALOGUES, DEBATES AND INTERACTIONS THROUGH A CASE STUDY. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2011, vol.47, n.1, pp.193-221. ISSN 0486-6525.
This article describes and comments on methodological issues of the ethnographic research with archives. A French man, rooted in Bahia, Brazil, in the decade of 1940, Verger is known for his many travels worldwide, for his work as a photographer and for his ethnographic studies. The Pierre Verger Foundation is the institution that hosts his photographic and ethnographic collection and it's also where the field research presented in this article as a case study took place. Through the field research, a photographic analysis methodology that privileges interaction and dialogue was created as a way to build anthropological concepts and definitions. Through the contact with the Foundation's archives, as well as with its users, this article intends to reflect on the idiosyncrasies of an ethnography taken place in a photographic archive.
