Abstract
ACOSTA VERGARA, MARÍA ALEJANDRA. A LOOK AT SKELETAL OCCUPATIONAL MARKERS DURING THE EARLY PERIOD (340 B. C.-440 A. D.) IN THE CAUCA RIVER VALLEY. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2012, vol.48, n.1, pp.169-187. ISSN 0486-6525.
The analysis of skeletal markers produced by occupational activity is a focus of human osteology developed over the past four decades. Although the techniques for registration and evaluation of markers require improvement, and there is a need for a better understanding of bone reaction to physical pressure, the insight provided by biomechanical studies of bone tissue are nevertheless remarkable in that it allows for the reconstruction of body movements and it is able to identify patterns of physical activity of certain populations. This article reviews the methodological aspects of the skeletal markers of occupational stress (MOS) and provides a brief example of its application in five populations from the early period (340 ± 150 B. C.-440 ± 100 A. D.) in the geographic region of the Cauca river valley.
Keywords : bone remodeling; markers of occupational stress; early period; geographic region of the Cauca River Valley.
